Although there has been a church in the village of Falmer since before the Norman Conquest the current church will be 200 years old in 2017. There will be a programme of activities during the year which will include a lecture series featuring prominent academics from the universities of Brighton and Sussex, a special programme of concerts, and exhibitions.
THE FALMER LECTURE SERIES
OCTOBER 26th 2017: ‘Busy Bees and Twinkling Stars: children’s books in the first half of the 19th century’. Dr. Sandra Williams, Senior Lecturer in the School of Education, University of Brighton.
NOVEMBER 16th 2017: ‘In Sickness and in Health: Folk and Conventional Medicine through the ages’. Hilary Morris, Senior Lecturer in the School of Education, University of Brighton and Lecturer at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
All lectures take place in the Meeting House, University of Sussex, commencing at 6:30 PM.
All concerts take place at St. Laurence Church, Falmer, commencing at 5:30 PM
October November 4th: ‘Dawn Chorus with Caffeine!’ Sue Mileham (Soprano; Karen Rash (Flute); Nicola Grunberg (Piano)
November 18th @ 7PM: The Secret Life of Lutheran Chorales (Highlighting the 500th anniversary of the Reformation).
November: ‘Falmer through the years’ Heritage Exhibition (Open Weekends from 11-5)
NOVEMBER 9th: ‘Farming and the Countryside of Sussex in the Second World War’ A lecture by Professor Brian Short (6:30PM in Falmer Village Hall).
NOVEMBER 11th and 12th: Craft fair in Falmer Village Hall (10-4)
DECEMBER 17th at 2PM: THE FALMER NATIVITY. We will conclude our year of celebration with a nativity play which will move around the village of Falmer. This will begin at St. Laurence Church.
